Our own Peter Bright upgraded from Windows 8.1 last night, and he said it was "more or less flawless." The in-place upgrade is a lot more convenient than a fresh install-Microsoft seems to have finally worked out how to upgrade an OS-but it's also no big deal to do a clean installation. If you don't have Windows 7 or 8 (or 8.1)-if you're finally leaving behind Windows XP-you'll need to buy a licence, which will set you back £99/€135 for the Home edition or £189/€279 for Pro.

If you're running Windows 8/8.1, you can mount the ISO directly alternatively, Microsoft has some easy-to-use tools for making bootable DVDs and USB drives. AdvertisementĬuriously, rather than providing HTTP links to the ISO files, Microsoft wants you to grab a "download tool," which then lets you download an ISO. One Ars commenter discovered that if you visit the site on Windows XP (in a virtual machine in this case), you instead get direct HTTP links to the ISOs. If you have a Linux or Mac machine handy, you could also use these to grab the ISOs, rather than the download tool. The final Windows 10 build is also available on MSDN for subscribers. If Windows Update isn't yet showing you Windows 10, and you don't want to wait your turn in the staggered release, you can grab the ISO files directly. The helper app will prompt you when Windows 10 is ready to install-but don't panic if it doesn't: this is a staggered release (you might not be prompted for a day or two). If you reserved a copy of Windows 10 via the nag screen, your copy of Windows 10 may have already been pre-downloaded over the last few days. If you don't see Windows 10 in Windows Update, follow the instructions below to install via ISO. Hit the Start key, type "Update," and select "Windows Update" from the list of options.

Rejoice! Windows 10 is now available to download. If you're using Windows 7 or Windows 8 (or 8.1), the free upgrade to Windows 10 should now be available through Windows Update.
